Nebraska House Insulation: Comfort for Every Season
Nebraska homes need insulation that supports comfort through hot summers and cold winters. The right approach considers the entire building envelope: the roof, walls, floors and connections separating conditioned rooms from outdoor or unconditioned spaces.
Insulation selection also depends on the home itself. An existing house with an accessible attic presents different opportunities than a new barndominium, a mobile home or a compact tiny house.
Prodex Total combines a closed-cell polyethylene foam core with reflective facings. In a properly designed assembly, it adds thermal resistance, radiant-heat control and vapor-control properties. It can also complement cavity insulation where additional thermal resistance is needed.

Start with a Whole-Home Insulation Plan
Identify the Boundary Around Your Living Space
Before choosing materials, determine which surfaces separate heated and cooled rooms from outdoor conditions.
In a home with a vented, unconditioned attic, that boundary commonly follows the ceiling below the attic. In another design, it may follow the roofline. Crawl spaces and basements also require a deliberate choice about which areas belong inside the conditioned enclosure.
This decision determines where insulation and air-control layers should go. Insulating an accessible surface without understanding its role can leave important gaps elsewhere.
Address Air Leakage Along with Insulation
Openings around attic access panels, plumbing penetrations, rim joists and other transitions can allow air to bypass insulation.
Plan insulation and air sealing together. Where Prodex Total forms part of an air-control layer, seams, edges and penetrations must be detailed continuously using the method specified for the selected product.
Consider Moisture Before Enclosing an Assembly
Repair roof leaks, plumbing leaks and drainage problems before installing insulation. Wet existing materials need evaluation and an opportunity to dry.
Because foil-faced insulation can restrict vapor movement, its location should be coordinated with existing vapor-control layers and the assembly’s drying potential. This is especially important when adding insulation to an older Nebraska home.
Where Can Prodex Total Be Used in a Nebraska Home?
Roof Insulation
Roofs receive direct summer sunlight and separate the home from winter conditions. The appropriate insulation arrangement depends on the roofing material, framing and whether the space beneath the roof is conditioned.
Reflective surfaces need an adjacent airspace to provide their radiant-barrier function. For suitable roof-over-deck assemblies, this may involve Prodex Total over the decking, with furring above it to create an airspace beneath the roofing. Follow the instructions for the specific roof system.
Explore our Nebraska roof and ceiling insulation guide and national roof insulation guide before selecting an installation method.
Attic and Ceiling Insulation
Begin by deciding whether the attic will remain outside the conditioned space or become part of it.
In a vented attic, preserve required ventilation paths and coordinate any reflective layer with the existing ceiling insulation. A reflective layer should not be assumed to replace the bulk insulation needed to meet the assembly’s thermal requirements.
Maintain required clearances around heat-producing equipment and follow the instructions applicable to the materials and fixtures present.
Our reflective insulation guide explains how airspaces, orientation and installation affect performance.
Wall Insulation
Walls benefit from attention to both the insulated cavities and the framing that interrupts them.
Where a continuous Prodex Total layer is specified, carry it across the studs rather than installing it only between them. Coordinate the layer with window and door openings, electrical penetrations, exterior drainage details and interior finishes.
The wall must be able to manage water and dry as intended. Select the product and layer placement for the complete wall assembly rather than using the same arrangement in every application.
Floors Above Unconditioned Spaces
Floors above garages, crawl spaces and other unconditioned areas can contribute to uncomfortable rooms.
A suitable assembly may combine cavity insulation with a continuous layer beneath the floor framing. Where continuous insulation is intended, cover the joists and detail the perimeter and penetrations.
Control air leakage and protect the installation from moisture, damage and other conditions associated with the space below.
Crawl Spaces
Crawl space insulation begins with drainage, ground moisture and the choice between a vented or encapsulated approach.
That choice influences whether insulation belongs beneath the floor above or along the crawl space walls. Ground moisture control is a separate part of the system and should use the product specified for that application.
When Under Concrete Prodex Total is specified for a ground application, install it white side up with the foil toward the soil, following the applicable instructions.
Our Nebraska crawl space insulation guide provides additional planning guidance.
Basement Walls and Rim Joists
Basement insulation requires attention to foundation moisture and drying conditions. Correct bulk-water entry before covering foundation surfaces.
Plan wall insulation, rim-joist air sealing and required interior protection together. The appropriate arrangement depends on the foundation, existing materials and intended use of the basement.
Under Concrete Slabs
Under-slab insulation and moisture control should be planned before concrete placement.
Under Concrete Prodex Total is a dedicated product for this application. Install it white side up and foil toward the soil, following instructions for the prepared base, seams and penetrations.
Determine the slab’s required thermal resistance separately. A thin under-slab product should not automatically be treated as equivalent to a thicker insulation layer specified by the building design.
Insulation for Different Nebraska Home Types
Traditional Houses
New construction allows insulation, air sealing and moisture control to be coordinated before walls and ceilings are closed.
For an existing home, start with accessible areas and known comfort problems. An attic, crawl space or exposed floor assembly may offer opportunities without opening finished walls.
Tiny Houses
Limited space makes assembly planning especially important in a tiny home. Thin insulation products can be useful, but the complete roof, wall and floor systems still need adequate thermal performance and moisture control.
Explore our tiny house insulation guide for application considerations.
Mobile and Manufactured Homes
Mobile homes may have restricted roof and floor cavities, existing belly coverings and details that differ from conventional site-built homes.
Inspect for water damage and determine how insulation can be installed and protected without interfering with the home’s systems. Our mobile home insulation guide provides additional direction.
Barndominiums
A barndominium combines residential comfort requirements with a building shell that may use post-frame or steel construction.
Coordinate the insulation with the framing type, metal cladding, living areas and any adjoining workshop. See our Nebraska pole barn insulation guide for post-frame structures.
Shipping Container Homes
Steel container shells require careful planning around condensation, thermal bridging and limited interior space.
Visit our Nebraska shipping container insulation guide for related applications.
Yurts and Residential Trailers
Lightweight structures need insulation that fits their framing, coverings and intended occupancy. Heating, ventilation and moisture management become particularly important when these spaces are used throughout winter.
Our yurt insulation guide addresses that structure’s particular considerations. For trailers, choose an assembly suited to the shell and follow applicable installation requirements.
Compare Prodex Total with Other Insulation Materials
Fiberglass provides bulk thermal resistance and can be combined with Prodex Total in an appropriately designed assembly. Layer placement matters because thermal performance and moisture control depend on how the materials work together.
Read our Nebraska fiberglass vs. Prodex Total guide for a closer comparison.
Rigid board and spray foam are other options for selected assemblies. Our foam board insulation guide explains board applications and detailing. For metal or post-frame residential shells, our spray foam insulation guide for metal buildings and pole barns discusses relevant considerations.
Compare thermal-performance claims under equivalent conditions. An assembly R-value that includes airspaces should not be compared directly with another material’s standalone R-value.
Choose Your Prodex Total Product and Calculate Quantities
10M Prodex Total Plus is the most popular and thickest reflective insulation roll in the Prodex Total range. It features a 10 mm, approximately 0.4-inch, closed-cell foam core, reinforced reflective foil on both sides and heat-welded seams. Each roll measures 4 feet by 85.3 feet and covers 341 square feet.
The 5M Plus range offers thinner options, including rolls with a black, white or rustic finish on one side and reflective foil on the other. Choose the product according to the assembly, installation method and desired finish.
Measure each area before ordering, allowing for the required overlaps, cuts and transitions. Use the Advanced Insulation Calculator and review how much insulation you need to help plan quantities.
